The Cosy Cow Shed offers comfortable accommodation for two, or great value accommodation for four. We are working on the renovation of this lovely little barn right now. It’s small, but perfectly formed, because at To The Lighthouse we believe that size isn’t everything. So you’ll find a high-standard specification that anyone who has already stayed at Driftwood, Chapel Cottage or Wildwood Cottage will already know about, with a delightful wood-burner, quality fittings and utensils in the compact kitchen, uber-comfy beds and our usual organic linen bedding, high beamed ceilings in the living area, and a wet-room with walk-in shower. The Cosy Cow Shed is set high on a hill in the farmy-horsey-gorsey countryside, strategically situated between St Ives Bay, Mount’s Bay, the Lizard Peninsular, and the sheltered waters of the Helford and Falmouth Bay.

We are scheduled to finish the renovation of the Cosy Cow Shed in spring 2012. Sorry no interior photos yet for obvious reasons, so you’ll have to rely on the description, and the standard set by our other cottages. If you are less than delighted when you do see the pictures, you can have a full deposit refund. Can’t say fairer than that:)

The accommodation

The Cosy Cowshed sits adjacent to the farm-stead that it once served. Step inside and straight into the open-living lounge, kitchen and dining area, with its dark stained wooden floor and high white-painted open ceiling. You’ll find the kitchen area unapologetically small, but well equipped with an easy-to-wipe halogen hob and electric oven, a fridge with a small freezer compartment, and a ceramic sink set into a solid beech work-top. There’s a blender, a nice toaster, a microwave and plenty of pots and pans for the more enthusiastic cook. Note that there is no dishwasher at the Cosy Cow Shed; it’s simple living here, but with no compromise on quality. There is a round dining table and four chairs, and beyond it a comfy sofa nestling by the classic wood-burner. A 32″ TV and DVD are mounted to the wall.

There are two bedrooms at the Cosy Cow Shed, one with a double bed, and the other with bunk beds — one is at each end of the building, with the living area and bathroom in between. Both bedrooms are compact but very cosy. The bathroom follows the same philosophy of convenient comfort with its slate floor and walk-in shower area for a spacious showering experience!

Guests at the Cosy Cow Shed have a separate small barn for their exclusive use which has a washing machine, and loads of storage space for things like bikes, surfbords, travel bags etc. It’s right next to the Cosy Cow Shed front door, a few paces away.

You'll find

  • Wildflower meadows
  • Garden furniture
  • Webber barbeque
  • Spacious private area of paddock
  • Bridleways and footpaths
  • Riding stables nearby

The garden

Through double (and of course double-glazed) patio doors you’ll find an outdoor dining area, shelter overhead, and a nice Webber barbeque, plus clothes-drying line. Beyond that is a large paddock, a generous part of which is set aside for you, and the rest of which may contain horses (depending on the time of year). You are welcome to wander up into the two meadows beyond. Here you will find wonderful biodiversity underfoot and in the hedgerows. The meadows are at their best throughout the spring and summer and are cut for hay usually in September. You can picnic, enjoy the view and sea glimpses from the top meadow, or exercise a dog (but please keep it on a lead in the paddock). You will find the surrounding countryside to be un-touristy and fascinating. There are miles of footpaths and bridleways, historic mining sites (many listed), beautiful churches or pubs. Yet minutes away by car you can be enjoying fine dining at the picturesque fishing village of Porthleven, catching a wave at the fabulous surf beach of Gwithian, soaking up twentieth-century modern art at the Tate St Ives, or sailing a Laser on the famous Helford river estuary.

We love

  • Great little wood-burner
  • Organic linen
  • Green-tariff electricity
  • Flowery meadows
  • Country walks
  • Very very cosy

The wow factor

The Cosy Cow Shed does what it says on the tin, but with bags of personality and helpful little touches. Because it’s small it makes a lovely and intimate bolt-hole for two where you can cook, snuggle, relax, read, chill, hunker down… or whatever takes your fancy. At the same time it makes great value accommodation for four with plenty of garden space for young children to let off steam and explore the great outdoors. The setting is quite special; hear a cry and look up and you’ll see buzzards soar. Spring turns the hedges into gardens to shame Chelsea with campion, fox-glove and cow-parsley. From May to September swallows raise broods in the open barns next door and rehearse aerobatic skills overhead, or flocks of bustling hedge-sparrows riot through the hedgerows. October brings blackberries (help yourself), rolling clouds, and perhaps a fox slipping through a gate. So, change down a gear, get away from the madding coastal crowds and get a different perspective at the Cosy Cow Shed.

Carbon offsetting

Cornwall is a beautiful and unspoilt place, but like all coastal areas, and indeed the ecosystem of the entire world, it is under threat from climate change. You may already have joined the millions of people worldwide who make their holiday and business travel carbon neutral by contributing to a carbon offsetting scheme. Here is a link to one of the best, the World Land Trust (given top marks in a recent Which report). On the site you can use the simple Transport Calculator on the home page, and make your holiday carbon neutral by contributing to a conservation project or tree-planting scheme www.carbonbalanced.org
