This beautiful, recently renovated fisherman’s cottage sleeps four (+ cot), and is only available in the summer. It’s tucked away up a typically narrow and quiet side street overlooking the harbour in the heart of the picturesque and bustling fishing village of Newlyn, in the far West of Cornwall. Kiln Cottage makes a great base for discovering Newlyn, Mousehole, the Minack Theatre, west Cornwall, St Ives, Land’s End, or any of the pristine beaches of Penwith (like Porthcurno, pictured). Kiln Cottage will transport you back to simpler times, whilst at the same time offering contemporary comfort and facilities.

Kiln Cottage is a charming self-catering holiday cottage big enough for a family, but small enough to be cosy for a couple, with beamed ceilings, an open fire and a woodburner, a well equipped kitchen, light and airy bedrooms and a delightful patio with an impressive giant avocado tree! Newlyn remains the home of Cornwall’s fishing industry, and is at the same time part of a thriving artistic community. Food lovers will be able to choose from the day’s catch from one of our local shops or alternatively can grab a table at one of our good local restaurants. Art lovers will be spoilt for choice too, with the Tate, Penlee House, Newlyn Art Gallery, The Exchange and lots of independent galleries nearby.

The facilities

  • Double bedroom
  • Twin bedroom with open beams
  • Well equipped kitchen
  • Comfortable living areas with wood-burner and open fire
  • Parking nearby

The accommodation

Entering Kiln Cottage from the very quiet side street, you will find a welcoming dining room with a wood-burner, opening through into a cosy living area with a romantic open fireplace, comfortable settee and flat screen TV/DVD. Beyond is the well equipped cook’s kitchen which overlooks the private courtyard garden.

Upstairs via the original cottage staircase two bedrooms beckon with open beams and pine floors. One is a double with sea glimpses and the other a twin (please note the cat in the picture is not included in the let!). The pretty traditional bathroom has a shower over the bath.

You'll find

  • Private courtyard garden
  • A great big avocado tree
  • Places to sit in the sun
  • Logs for the fire
  • BBQ and garden furniture

The garden

Kiln Cottage’s courtyard garden is sheltered and secluded, so if you don’t fancy going out you can enjoy your own crab salad and a glass of chilled pinot noir under the gently swaying parasol of your very own giant avocado tree!

But it’s the village of Newlyn that’s the real setting. Tucked into the sheltered western shore of Mount’s Bay between Penzance and Mousehole, Newlyn looks over the sea towards Marazion, the famously inspiring St Michael’s Mount, and beyond to the Lizard peninsula. It makes the perfect self-catering base for exploring west Cornwall; whether beaches, food, art, walking, bronze-age history or Rosamunde Pilcher is your thing!

We love

  • Wandering down to the harbour
  • Pasties for lunch
  • The not-quite-square rooms
  • The fab solar panels
  • The Smeg cooker
  • Beautiful wood everywhere
  • Open fire and wood-burner

The wow factor

Kiln Cottage is owned, and has been lovingly restored, by a local boat-builder who has also restored some of the finest examples of traditional luggers (uniquely Cornish nineteenth century lug-rigged fishing boats) to be found anywhere. He’s a real craftsman, and it shows in the detail of Kiln Cottage wherever you look.

Kiln Cottage retains all of its traditional charm but with the added comfort of a modern home (although if you happen to be over 6ft4” beware of the low beams downstairs!). With a serious nod to sustainable building you will find many original features combined with double-glazing, a contemporary kitchen and water heated by efficient solar panels.

Carbon offsetting

Cornwall is a beautiful and unspoilt place, but like all coastal areas, and indeed the ecosystem of the entire world, it is under threat from climate change. You may already have joined the millions of people worldwide who make their holiday and business travel carbon neutral by contributing to a carbon offsetting scheme. Here is a link to one of the best, the World Land Trust (given top marks in a recent Which report). On the site you can use the simple Transport Calculator on the home page, and make your holiday carbon neutral by contributing to a conservation project or tree-planting scheme www.carbonbalanced.org
